“Biodiversity loss could impact food production, water quality and carbon dioxide levels more than previously thought, scientists have discovered.” The more species that are conserved in an ecosystem the greater the chances that the ecosystem will survive and flourish. Plants convert carbon dioxide to oxygen via photosynthesis, animals convert oxygen to carbon dioxide via respiration and living things are decomposed by detritivores. But if only one of each of these classes of organisms was alive in an ecosystem then it probably would not survive. An ecosystem needs lots of different organisms in it to remain healthy, in other words maintaining biodiversity is very important!
