Many people believe that boys prefer playing with toy cars while girls prefer playing with dolls as a result of social influences, not innate or genetic differences.
Researchers have just done an experiment using 11 male and 23 female rhesus monkeys. The monkeys are not subject to social influences like advertising, parental encouragement or peer chastisement. The scientists discovered that the males preferred to play with wheeled toys, such as dumper trucks, over plush dolls, while female monkeys played with both kinds of toys.
It seems that male and female primates really do prefer to play with different toys. Read more here.
