Why the Higgs is the missing link

July 6, 2012

Fifty years after its existence was predicted, scientists have finally caught a glimpse of the elusive Higgs boson. The particle is thought to be the missing link in the standard model of particle physics, but why does it complete the puzzle?

In this video, animator Henry Reich explains the integral role of the Higgs boson, illustrating how it gives other particles their mass and why it’s a key component in our model of the weak nuclear force.
