New plastics can self heal

It sounds like the stuff of Harry Potter – in which the wizard has his cracked spectacles fixed with a flash of light from a magic wand – but scientists have found that they can indeed fix cracks in materials with a flash of light. Laser light, of course.

Researchers have created a polymer that mends itself when hit with a bright beam of UV light. The new self-healing plastic could find its way into coatings for automobiles, mobile phone screens and other everyday devices, making scratches and other minor dings vanish as if they were never there.
