Laser made from a kidney cell

Lasers, the key to optical communications, data storage, and a host of other modern technology, are usually made from inanimate solids, liquids, or gases. Now, a pair of scientists have developed what could be the world’s first biological laser.

The human kidney cell that was used to make the laser survived the experience. In future such “living lasers” might be created inside live animals, which could potentially allow internal tissues to be imaged in unprecedented detail. The laser might also be used for light-based therapeutics, perhaps killing cancer cells deep inside the body. Learn more here or here.
